Archive for "Inspiration"

Looking at the gallery schedule these days, it’s hard not to notice all the great shows that are up. From having attended the Whitney Biannual recently to the Contemporary Photography show at the Guggenheim and the revered imagery of Henri Cartier-Bresson at MoMA, one cannot help but be inspired. I was recently inspired to start a series about people and their relationships to objects. In particular, the objects they either cannot live without or get rid of. In the imagery I wished to show that such a mental and emotional state regarding these objects and the energy we put into having them has a physical effect on us that ties us down. As a result, I took different colored rope of various thicknesses (representing the various emotional ties) and tied each person’s top ten objects to them and took their portrait. After taking a series of these images and reflecting on them, I realized that I needed to take things further. Having 10 objects tied to people was more visually confusing and got in the way of my making my point. Also, I realized that the physical act of tying was not necessary and could be played with. With my forte for propping and pre-visualizing, I realized that I needed to take more control over how these objects looked and the impact they played, instead of leaving that part up to chance. Therefore, as a result I am taking this series into a new and more visually arresting direction, lending itself to more of a stylized look, yet reinventing itself with every new image. New images to come…

Domi's Top 10 Objects

I’ve always had an affinity towards animals, granted usually the live kind, however it does explain in part my fascination with taxidermy. Taxidermy has been around for hundreds of years, and has served purposes from education to amusement. For those involved it’s a process to perfect and a form of self-expression. To many outsiders however, it’s a spectacle that at times is reminiscent of the movie Frankenstein. All this came under one roof recently at the Bell House in Brooklyn, NY, Nov 15th for The Secret Science Club’s Taxidermy Contest (which I couldn’t pass up). From a kitten done to be a Victorian bride, to bugs reading the paper and knitting, the range and skill level varied just as the people did that competed in such a wonderful event. This thus begins my effort to photograph these people and find out why they are drawn to it too.
