I’ve always had an affinity towards animals, granted usually the live kind, however it does explain in part my fascination with taxidermy. Taxidermy has been around for hundreds of years, and has served purposes from education to amusement. For those involved it’s a process to perfect and a form of self-expression. To many outsiders however, it’s a spectacle that at times is reminiscent of the movie Frankenstein. All this came under one roof recently at the Bell House in Brooklyn, NY, Nov 15th for The Secret Science Club’s Taxidermy Contest (which I couldn’t pass up). From a kitten done to be a Victorian bride, to bugs reading the paper and knitting, the range and skill level varied just as the people did that competed in such a wonderful event. This thus begins my effort to photograph these people and find out why they are drawn to it too.
